Prolonged Exposure (PE)
What is Prolonged Exposure (PE)?
Prolonged Exposure is one of the most effective treatments for PTSD. It helps you approach the memories and situations you’ve been avoiding due to the trauma(s) you’ve experienced. Avoidance can seem like the best (or only) strategy for dealing with trauma, but unfortunately, it’s not a very effective tool in the long term. Prolonged exposure breaks the cycle and helps you emotionally process what happened, empowering you to heal and move forward.
What to Expect
- Psychoeducation about trauma and PTSD — understanding why your symptoms make sense
- In vivo exposure — gradually approaching real-world situations you’ve been avoiding
- Imaginal exposure — revisiting the traumatic memory in a safe, controlled way during session
- Processing after each exposure to identify shifts in your thoughts and feelings
