What Are Specific Phobias?

A specific phobia is an intense fear of a particular object or situation — flying, heights, needles, animals, driving, enclosed spaces, and so on. Most people have mild fears, but a phobia crosses the line when it leads you to avoid things that significantly limit your life. The avoidance feels helpful in the moment but reinforces the fear over time.

What It Can Look Like

  • A rush of fear or panic when you encounter — or even think about — the thing you're afraid of
  • Going out of your way to avoid it, even when it makes your life harder
  • Physical reactions like a pounding heart, sweating, shaking, or nausea
  • Knowing the fear is out of proportion but not being able to stop it
  • The fear has stuck around for months and shows no signs of fading on its own

How I Can Help

Exposure therapy is the most effective treatment for phobias and one of the best-supported treatments in psychology. We’ll build a step-by-step plan to face what you’ve been avoiding. Phobias tend to respond well and relatively quickly to this approach.
