What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?

CBT is one of the most widely studied and effective forms of therapy, built on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It’s important to note that there are lots of cognitive behavioral therapies, each of which has a slightly different “flavor.” I draw from a range of strategies under the CBT umbrella and tend to lean toward the behavioral side — taking action guided by your values, exposure to feared situations, and building tolerance for difficult emotions. I also incorporate cognitive strategies when they fit. The mix depends on you and what you’re working through.

What to Expect

  • We start by understanding the patterns — what triggers distress and what keeps it going
  • Sessions tend to be structured and goal-focused
  • You’ll practice approaching situations you’ve been avoiding
  • Homework between sessions is part of the process — lasting change happens in real life, not just the therapy room
