Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?
ACT (pronounced like the word “act”) is a cognitive behavioral therapy that takes a different approach from more traditional CBT approaches: instead of trying to eliminate difficult thoughts and feelings, it helps you develop a new relationship with them. The goal is psychological flexibility — being present, open to your experience, and able to take action guided by your values, even when things are hard.
What to Expect
- Mindfulness exercises to observe thoughts and feelings without getting caught up in them
- Values clarification — identifying what matters to you when fear isn’t making the decisions
- Acceptance practices for making space for discomfort rather than fighting it
- Committed action — concrete steps toward your values, even when it’s uncomfortable
